BLMS Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a reading program designed to motivate and track literary reading progress. Students read books which the library possesses tests for and take a five - ten question computerized test over the book to receive points. The book's allotted points are weighted according to the difficulty and length of the reading material. The software keeps a record of the students tests and progress. Test results may be printed for patrons. Basehor-Linwood Middle School students have academic objectives related to their participation in the Accelerated Reader program. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade middle school students enroll in a reading course in which a reading assessment is obtained with the STAR test each quarter and Accelerated Reader progress is monitored throughout the year. There are numerous AR Rewards throughout the year.

We have over 10,000 Accelerated Reader quizzes at present. Quizzes must be purchased for each building from Renaissance Learning. However, some really good books are not on the AR list. If you would like to see a book on the test list, you can ask the librarian to order a quiz for a book when funds and quiz are available. If a test is not available from Accelerated Reader, a student may ask the librairian to keep checking for availability if funds are available. There may be other options available as well. If a student or parent have any questions about Accelerated Reader, please feel free to contact the librarian or the building principal.

Literacy Skills Tests are also available for students and are sometimes required in reading classes at the middle school level. Literacy Skills tests have higher level questions beyond the basic recall questions on Reading Practice Accelerated Reader quizzes which are targeted to determine if a student has read a book. Literacy Skills Tests do not automatically give students credit with points. Many teachers use these higher level tests to assess comprehension after the students read a book as a group and discuss the literary elements. Some teachers offer students extra credit when they take and pass the literacy skills test in addition to a reading practice (basic recall questions) quiz.
